Chipiliro: The lost battle against cancer
It is often tempting for non-profit organisations to only share success stories. Here we share our failures, one of them being Chipiliro who succumbed to cancer

Facing cancer in Malawi is an immense challenge, especially in rural areas where access to medical and home-based care is limited or nonexistent.
This was the reality for Chipiliro, a single mother and cancer patient living in Chilembwe Village. She had been bedridden for months when she was discovered by our volunteer, Charlotte, during her three-week stay.

Chipiliro’s husband abandonded the family when she became sick, leaving them hopeless and helpless. The family house was so dilapidated and leaking.
Urunji team provided mattresses, blankets and food items. We also provided a radio to keep her company as she was usually alone.
We provided clothing to the children as well as Crocks shoes and learning materials to ensure the children returned to school.

What began as a short volunteering trip quickly turned into a mission of crisis response, as Charlotte joined Urunji in tackling multiple urgent issues—including a famine that had just begun, and providing care and support to Chipiliro.
