Mastering a number of the world languages is a great asset to one’s future career. An international/world language is a language that is spoken internationally by a large number of people as a second language.
Here are some examples of the world languages:
English
French
German
Spanish
Russian
Chinese
Arabic, among others.
Learning and mastering some of these languages creates a big opportunity for one to get employment in any country worldwide, depending on how fluent you are in that particular language.
Schools teach international languages though many students do not take them seriously. Recently in Uganda, the Education Board introduced a system of teaching new international languages, in addition to the existing ones, starting with the year 2017. Before, Schools have been mainly teaching English as an International language, compulsory for every student. Few Schools in Uganda have been teaching French and German and these have been optional. So with the introduction of this new system, the International languages are going to be compulsory for every student. Some parents and students do not support this, because they are ignorant about the importance and advantages of one being a linguistic.
Nowadays, most graduates are interested to work abroad. When you search for a job on the Internet, you will find that most International job opportunities favour people who can speak at least one of the International languages in addition to English. When you land on a job of your profession but unfortunately requiring you to have knowledge of a certain International language which you do not have, that is when you realise the importance of learning a number of the International languages, and wonder why you did not do so while still at school where you had a chance to learn them. Nevertheless, there are Institutions which teach languages and the Internet is also very resourceful; that is, if you can handle it yourself (self-learning using internet).
On the contrary, learning international languages is not only for career purposes but also for easy communication in case of travelling abroad on business trips, vacations, study, among others.
In conclusion, with the knowledge of some of the international languages, one can stand out for many job opportunities worldwide. Therefore, teachers should advise students the importance of learning International languages; and even if you learn any two of them, it will be a great asset in future. More so, parents should also support their children and encourage them to study these languages, as it is said, Knowledge is Power – the more one knows, the more one will be able to control events.
