Volunteering with Urunji

Here are the terms and conditions for volunteering with Urunji Child-Care Trust

Introduction

A volunteer is deemed to be any individual who has interest in working with the Urunji Child-Care Trust (UCCT) without remuneration. Volunteers coming to work with UCCT must first embrace and respect our vision, core values and mission. No volunteer is allowed to change the policies that govern the running of UCCT or its constituent programmes.

Duties of a volunteer

The primary purpose of voluntary work is to fill in the gaps that regular UCCT employees cannot manage to under normal circumstances. Volunteers are either skilled individuals who help with unique activities like offering music lessons, teaching unique sport or offering career guidance to children we support and their families/communities. Volunteers are not permitted to perform any administrative functions and/or duties. However, they are required to report to management any and/or perceived cases of:

a) Abuse or theft of organization property or finances by staff or stakeholders.

b) Unfair treatment of staff, children in programme and/or their families.

c) Sexual abuse or segregation against

Volunteers are discouraged from befriending only selected children or partners we work with as this is deemed segregation. Much as we appreciate diverse cultures, it may not be permissible in other areas to kiss in public or to wear clothing that exposes thighs, legs or breasts by women volunteers.

Recruitment of volunteers

Volunteers are normally recruited by the Steering Committee of the Trust. The steering committee comprises of the Executive Director, Programme Officer, The Board Treasurer and The Administrative Assistant. UCCT reserves the right to terminate the services of any volunteer if management deems that continuation of such services may put the image of the trust in jeopardy. It is not automatic that UCCT provides reasons for such a termination. The maximum period for volunteering is 90 days.

Persons wishing to volunteer beyond this period are required to submit an official application letter and will have to undergo normal recruitment procedure(s) which is/are supposed to be competitive.

Banned items and behaviour in UCCT premises and programme areas

The following list is among banned items and behaviour in our programmes:

i) Use of drugs and substances like Alcohol and cigarettes is not allowed.

ii) Giving gifts is only allowed if done through the Urunji Child-Care Trust’s management.

iii) Use of foul language and derogatory remarks.

iv) Making of parallel structures which undermine UCCT’s work.

Prerequisites for Volunteering

Every volunteer is required to provide their medical reports before taking up voluntary work with UCCT. A police clearance is required for people who for the preceding 8 years were convicted of felony, child-abuse or gender violence.

Termination of Services for Volunteers

Management of UCCT may terminate the services of a volunteer with or without notice if it is deemed that the continued work of the said person jeopardises with the smooth running of UCCT or the children we support. In such cases, UCCT is not obliged to give reasons for the termination.
